KeywordsOsteoporosis ; Screening.
AnnotationThere are two potential means whereby osteoporotic fractures might be prevented. The first involves targeting the whole population, with the aim of improving everyone's bone mass. The alternative intervention targets only those at most risk of future fracture. Bone density is a good predictor of future fracture risk, and cost effectiveness analyses of the second, high risk approach suggest economic benefits of policies targeting pharmacological treatment to those at highest risk. This review sets out to demonstrate that screening for osteoporosis is not justified at the present, but the situation may change with the development of new bone-specific treatments. (RH).
