AnnotationAlthough many of the chronic conditions afflicting older populations are preventable through appropriate lifestyle interventions such as regular physical activity, people in this age group represent the most sedentary segment of the adult population. This paper provides a critical selected review of the scientific literature focusing on intervention to promote physical activity among older people. Articles from a literature search were considered relevant for this review if they were community-based, used a randomised design with an appropriate comparison group, and included information on intervention participation rates, pre- and post-intervention physical activity levels, and/or pre/post changes in relevant physical performance measures. 29 studies fitted the stated criteria. Among the strengths of studies reviewed were reasonable physical activity participation rates and relatively long study durations. Weaknesses were relative lack of specific behavioural or programme-based strategies aimed at promoting physical activity participation, as well as a dearth of studies aimed at replication, generalisability of interventions to important sub-groups, implementation, and cost-effectiveness evaluation.
