Annotation | The "successful ageing" paradigm championed by Rowe and Kahn has become a valued and powerful paradigm in the culture of gerontology. It has been particularly useful for understanding distinctions between primary and secondary ageing in later life, leading to numerous intervention studies designed to identify, prevent, and reverse functional losses associated with normal ageing. The authors pose some cautionary questions regarding the assumptions, conceptualisation, and application of the perspective. They suggest that the paradigm is parochial with respect to defining criteria, in that it fails to adequately incorporate life course dynamics, particularly the multiple meanings of age-related losses and dependency. It also fails to address the generalisability of assumptions and findings to heterogeneous populations of older people. It ignores evidence indicating numerous routes to ageing well. Lastly, it fails to consider the implications for older people who cannot age "successfully" because they are incapacitated or lack access to a wider environment. (RH). |
