Annotation | The relationship between peak aerobic power (VO2 peak) and performance on a modified Physical Performance Test (modified PPT) in older women was examined. 101 women aged 75 and over, living in the community, and seeking enrolment in randomised, controlled trials of exercise and/or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) were recruited. Simple regression analysis demonstrated VO2 peak associations with total PPT score (r=.53), gait speed (r=.44), time to rise from a chair five times (r=.43), and time to climb one flight of stairs (r=.36). Multiple regression analysis revealed that the relationship between VO2 peak and total modified PPT score, gait speed, chair rise time, and time to climb a flight of stairs were independent of age. Peak aerobic power is a significant test of physical function in older women and is an important component of physical frailty in this population. (RH). |
