Annotation | A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the distribution of cognitive functioning as measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in a sample of 1,360 Hispanic and non-Hispanic White (NHW) over-60s from the San Luis Valley Health and Aging Study (SLVHAS) of a rural area in Colorado. Hispanics tended to be categorised as severely impaired more than similarly age NHWs. However, older Hispanics and NHWs performed similarly, after adjusting for education and gender. The use of a modified MMSE scale which removed the ethnic bias demonstrated that NHWs and Hispanics had similar levels of severe impairment after full adjustment. Given the widespread use of the MMSE, these findings indicate the need for further validation of the instrument. (RH). |
