AnnotationMalnutrition is common among older people, and it is often acknowledged to be an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality among older patients in various clinical settings. The aim of this Italian study was to determine if body mass index (BMI) was predictive of mortality among older people living in the community. Data were obtained from a large prospective cohort study of home health care programmes. Results showed that malnutrition status was correlated with dependency in activities of daily living (ADLs). When controlling for clinical and functional variables, a low BMI remained a significant and independent predictor of shortened survival. (AKM).
