AnnotationThe last decade has seen a proliferation of concern that the ageing of the population will lead to a crisis in levels of public expenditure for health and aged care. This paper uses conceptual, technical and methodological arguments to examine the debates in this area in Australia, and concludes that an ageing population has not created insuperable difficulties for public or private expenditure in the last 15 years, nor is it likely to create significant problems in the future.
