AnnotationThis major conference, held in Aberdeen, was the first on this topic in Scotland, and presenters and participants came from a wide range of agencies and professions. The four papers in Part 1, on exploring issues, had learning from experience as a theme: the new drug treatments and their effectiveness; some principles for service provision; the role of psychiatry and the psychiatrist in rural communities; and lessons from a research study in Northern Ireland. Eight papers in Part 2 considered models of service provision: Community Units for the Elderly (CUEs) in York; the Joint Dementia Initiative (JDI) in Falkirk, an example of Home Day Care, or "Home from Home"; use by Stirling Council of an adult placement scheme in a rural community; the Shetland Welfare Trust; the Dachaidh Community Respite Care Scheme in Bedenoch and Strathspey; staffing issues on South Uist, Western Isles; and the CARD Project, a GP/social work initiative in Glasgow. The importance of joint working is reflected: no one agency can meet the needs of people with dementia or their carers on their own. (RH).
