AnnotationSupporting people with dementia and their carers in the community is a key role for district nurses, health visitors, community psychiatric nurses and practice nurses. This edition updates the original 1995 version and includes several new chapters with changed layout. It focuses on aspects of dementia in a practical way that begins with seeing the person behind the illness - that is, a person-centred approach. It also recognises that those who provide care at home are equally in need of sensitive approaches and support which help them care and cope with difficult situations. The guide presents information which will help differentiate between dementia and other treatable illnesses. New sections reflect the increasing importance of listening to the user's view, as well as ways of working with difficult behaviour. Also introduced is the CarenapD Assessment, the only specially devised needs assessment for people with dementia. (RH).
