AnnotationUndergraduate medical education reforms are forcing specific training in geriatric medicine out the curriculum. Increasing subspecialisation is producing doctors who are unable to deal with the complexity of multiple pathology found in most older people. Postgraduate education requires reorganisation, including mandatory attachments in geriatric medicine, to ensure that all doctors are capable of managing older patients appropriately. Topics and examples of learning experiences for an undergraduate curriculum in geriatric medicine are suggested. This is one of four articles based on presentations given at a BMJ conference on "Medicine in an Ageing Society" in November 1999. (RH).
