Annotation | The report "Speaking up for justice" (Home Office, 1988) put forward 78 proposals designed to encourage and support vulnerable or intimidated witnesses to give their best evidence in court cases. This booklet explains how agencies working in the criminal justice system will be responding to the report, and how such organisations will assist vulnerable or intimidated witnesses, taking into account major changes in the next 2 years. Key changes include: improvements in the identification of vulnerable or intimidated witnesses; measures to provide protection and reassurance for intimidated witnesses; greater communication about the needs of a witness; use of appropriate interview methods and pre-trial support; and a range of measures available for use at the trial. The reader is referred to Part II of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 which covers those parts of the recommendations requiring legislation. (RH). |
