Annotation | Older people abuse and misuse alcohol at a high rate. However, such abuse and misuse often goes undetected, because mental health providers, caretakers or significant others fail to acknowledge the existence of a problem. Using the strengths perspective, this article assists practitioners in their work with families, formal and informal supports, and social and health services, to help with the misuses of alcohol. The strengths model recognises that despite the difficult circumstances of advanced age, negative stereotypes and ageism, older adults have many personal strengths. In using a strengths perspective - as developed by D Saleebey in The strengths perspective in social work practice (1992 and 1997) - clients focus on their strengths and adaptive capacities. (RH). |
