AnnotationHealth care tends to focus on acute problems at the expense of managing and preventing exacerbations of chronic illness. The Royal Commission on Long Term Care's report, "With respect to old age" recommends the establishment of a national care commission to monitor trends, costs, accountability, and the interests of the consumer. The authors outline a possible solution that integrates and aligns health and personal care. They propose a partnership including general practitioners (GPs), geriatricians, and social support staff for care of frail older people. Partnership would be encouraged to, and be responsible for, maintaining and improving older people's health, rather than "firefight" acute illness. Planned, supported, and funded care by GPs may improve the health of care home residents and avoid episodes of expensive care. (RH).
