AnnotationThe emphasis of rehabilitation on functional ability and independence enables older people to remain at home, reduces burdens on carers and social and health service home support, and prevents or delays institutional care. Although rehabilitation has come under threat within the modern district general hospital, new opportunities exist within recent strategic policy documents that have focused attention on the importance and relevance of rehabilitation for older people. This article describes the core concepts of rehabilitation for older people, and sets the scene for forthcoming articles concerning specific rehabilitation topics. (RH).
