AnnotationCare workers - whether in domiciliary, residential or day-care settings - are ideally placed to identify problems which their clients are experiencing, including problems connected with drinking alcohol. Unfortunately, they may not be aware of the range of problems associated with drinking for older people; or they may overlook or misdiagnose drink problems as being signs of dementia, for example. "Not born yesterday" has been written and designed by a trainer at Aquarius, with funding from the Mental Health Foundation. It provides trainers with all they need to run a half-day course for care workers about alcohol and older people. It comprises background information, trainers' notes and session plans, photocopiable handouts, and visual aids for photocopying onto acetate for OHP slides. The course confines itself to the following aims: educating about alcohol and drinking; raising awareness of the specific alcohol-related risks for older people; introducing a harm minimisation (problem solving) approach to alcohol problems; highlighting ways of raising the issue sensitively; and considering who else to involve (including management and outside specialist and generic support).
