Annotation | There is a lack of detailed research evidence about the health-related behaviour of older people aged 55 and over. This report examines how an individual's lifestyle is related to psychosocial factors (e.g social support and family relationships) and marital/structural variables, such as occupational class, income and housing circumstances. Four complementary national datasets have been used: the Health Survey for England (HSE), 1993 and 1994; the General Household Survey (GHS), 1992-1994; the Health Education and Monitoring Survey (HEMS), 1995 and 1996; and the HEA Health and Lifestyles Survey (HALS), 1992 (Health Education Authority, 1995). The research examines the extent to which older people themselves have negative and fatalistic attitudes towards health. Four types of health-related behaviour are analysed: smoking; the social distribution of high and excessive drinking; physical activity: recreational, home-based, and walking versus sedentary lifestyles; and social structural factors associated with diet and smoking. Conclusions are drawn about the effects of living arrangements and material circumstance on health behaviour. Recommendations are made for future research. (RH). |
