AnnotationIn response to the need to house the older population, a variety of alternatives have surfaced. However, these have met with disparate responses - favourable from older consumers, but negative from some housing professionals. This research was conducted to better understand the attitudes of housing professionals (house builders, interior designers, city planners, developers, architects and mortgage lenders) to such alternatives. A random sample of each group in a US Midwestern county were sent a questionnaire concerning their knowledge of the older population, and awareness of, and support for, housing alternatives. Results showed few respondents had accurate information about older people; and while they were aware of traditional housing alternatives, they were less familiar with more innovative options. Further findings reflect that some groups of housing professionals are significantly less likely than others to support innovative housing options. (RH).
