AnnotationNursing students need community-based clinical experience early on in their courses. 98 baccalaureate nursing students in their first clinical course provided information about an experience with residents in public housing units for older people in East St Louis, Illinois. The students support the continuation of such clinical experience. Many indicated their previous lack of awareness of the large numbers of older people with chronic health problems who were living in the community. This study suggests that such a community experience can positively alter nursing students' perceptions toward providing health care to this population of older people. (RH).
