Annotation | Styles of experiencing and regulating emotion were studied among 1,662 middle-aged older Americans. Dimensions named Emotional Control, Emotional Maturity Through Maturation, Levelling of Positive Affect, Surgency, Stability-Moodiness, Psychophysiological Responsiveness, and Sensation Seeking were used to cluster individuals into the following groups: Free-Spirited, Inhibited, Vigorous, Even-Tempered, and Unstable. Concurrent validities were tested against background characteristics, trait affect frequency, and measures of external engagement. Within the limits of a cross-sectional design, the personality clusters' validities could be interpreted as reflecting joint effects of individual differences and developmental trends on affect levels, both effects displaying different mixes of openness and control.
