AnnotationThe impact of ageing on the workforce is considered in four ways. First, an overview of the effect of demographic trends is presented. Second, the imperative for societal institutions is discussed - particularly higher education - to take a proactive stance in preparing for the demographic shift toward an ageing workforce. Third, the argument is presented for the inclusion of ageing workforce curriculum in personnel management academic courses, and what students should know about their roles in training and/or retraining personnel for an ageing workforce. Finally, the authors present alternatives to personnel management - or as this is increasingly known, human resource development (HRD) - which also reflect current and emerging realities of the ageing workforce.
