Annotation | Employers will increasingly come to depend on colleges and universities to produce a trained workforce and the general public will request information about ageing processes and to age successfully. This article reviews the prevalence of formal gerontology courses in the US, and to determine their adequacy to meet six challenges in the 21st century: educating the general public; recruiting and training students; educating non-professionals and paraprofessionals; forging partnerships with employers; providing education for older people; and developing faculty expertise. Potential barriers to meeting these challenges are also discussed. (RH). |
