Annotation | An ageing population will be one of the world's most important social issues in the next fifty years. In the US, "diversity programs" are concerned with preparation for life through education, in particular sensitive issues such as racism, sexism, culture and disability. However, older people's needs have rarely been covered. This article advocates the need for educators to instil a balanced understanding of ageing at all levels of education. The article also provides an overview of ageing education as a diversity issue. Specifically, it suggests the components of an effective curriculum, and instructional methods and techniques for teaching ageing as a diversity issue in primary and secondary education. Issues in teaching older people in higher education are also discussed. (RH). |
