AnnotationThis study examines the different ways in which older women are treated and perceived in different societies. By using cross-cultural comparisons, it is possible to understand the influences that are important in a woman's experience of the middle and later years, including her menopausal experience. A number of themes emerge from studying older women's experiences cross-culturally: the status attained with age (including cessation of menstruation); the change of the role of women within the family; the role of ageing women within the working environment; the experience of specific symptoms attributable to the menopause; the impact of Western medicalisation of the menopause; and the views of older women as sexual beings. An increase in status at the time of the climacteric and beyond in Western societies seems to be rare. It might be beneficial in terms of preventive medicine and morbidity reduction if women were accorded a more positive outlook on the menopause and older age. (RH).
