Annotation | In February 1998, Lewisham Early Years Service and the Policy Equalities Unit jointly commissioned a research project into the needs of family members who regularly provide informal childcare for a close relative. The research aimed to provide information on the needs and experiences of family members providing informal childcare in the family, and to suggest ways in which childcare services could be developed. 23 interviews were completed with informal carers, all of whom were grandparents, all were women and aged 49 to 78. As patterns of employment and demographic change evolve, it is likely that more women in their retirement years will be involved in providing childcare for their grandchildren. Grandparents enable working parents to balance the demands of work and family life more effectively; and many reported that they did not want to be paid for the care they provide. Recommendations include reviewing childrens' services in the borough, and using the findings of this research to contribute to national debates about the relative merits of paying grandparents as childcarers.
