AnnotationThis report summarises the conclusions of four Working Groups under the guidance of a Steering Committee, set up at the suggestion of the Prince of Wales to consider the current positions of orthodox, complementary and alternative medicine in the UK, and how far it would be appropriate and possible for them to work more closely together. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) covers a very broad spectrum of non-conventional therapies, including self-care. The main questions concerned: priorities for research to evaluate efficacy, safety, biological plausibility and other factors relevant to CAM treatment; the most appropriate methods for such research; and co-ordinating and supporting research. These questions were considered by the four Working Groups, covering respectively research, regulation, education and training, and the delivery of integrated care. (RH).
