Annotation | The joint seminar with the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) was held on 16 April 1999. This report summarises speakers' papers and seminar conclusions. Kenneth Howse from CPA presented the findings of the research project, "Deaths of people alone". Wally Harbert, consultant on age issues, discussed the roles and duties of statutory agencies in identifying and tackling social isolation. Professor Marilyn Taylor, School of Applied Social Studies, University of Brighton, explored the role of the "community", and what community and neighbourhood involvement could achieve. Seminar discussion considered the reasons for social isolation and some solutions. Reasons for social isolation included: statutory failure; poverty; low self-image and expectations; public attitudes to old age; changing environment; loss of contacts; personal pride; mistrust; secrecy; physical and mental illness; and not wanting to be a joiner. Solutions explored included: identifying need before crisis; co-operation between statutory and voluntary bodies; respecting choice; involvement in the community; appreciating older people's worth; making better use of over 75 health checks; and enabling and empowering older people.
