Annotation | The emphasis of the practicum placement in the US is on service through which the student gains "practice" and an enhanced understanding of those being served, those with whom they work, and the skills necessary to provide effective and meaningful service. This article argues that the gerontology practicum placement also has elements of reflection, analysis and application built into the experience. Exit interviews with students and supervisors supported the idea that the practicum experience offered a balance between service and learning, and was an opportunity for interdisciplinary teamwork, reciprocal benefits, and professional development. Discussion focuses on the pedagogical techniques used to encourage individual and group reflection, the synthesis of experiences and academic training, and the application of new understandings in the field setting.
