Annotation | The current socioeconomic dilemma of the aged in less developed countries (LDCs) is examined, with special reference to African countries. Problems identified include role conflicts and the effects on traditional institutions of Western industrialisation and modernising processes. For example, the introduction of the popular franchise and the influence of Western society has adversely affected traditional political systems based on gerontocracy. The constitutional procedure has also reduced the wisdom and power of older people in Africa. Possible solutions are also offered as to how the eliminate these problems, so as to improve the socioeconomic status of older people in Africa. (RH). |
