AnnotationThe National Association of Inspection and Registration Officers (NAIRO) has produced a briefing paper on the principles of residential home registration. This presentation discusses the place, purpose and future of inspection and registration, in the context of the Wagner and Griffiths reports of the 1980s and the 1999 White Paper, "Aiming for excellence: modernising social work services in Scotland". If National Standards are introduced, the author believes that both NAIRO and the Relatives Association will have a duty to ensure that these are not minimum standards. She also hopes that new inspectors will be part of multidisciplinary teams, with the right experience: they must be prepared to actively promote good quality care. (RH).
