AnnotationIn 1998, Hungary embarked on a course of comprehensive pension reform. The reforms are likely to change the distribution of incomes of future generations. Poverty and income inequality among pensioners in Hungary before the introduction of pension reforms is analysed, for which data from the Panel Comparability Project (PACO) was used. The analysis indicates that the high cost of public pension provision in Hungary has as a consequence a relatively low incidence of poverty among pensioners (10% of such households). From a methodological point of view, the usefulness of bootstrapping techniques for carrying out statistical inference of poverty and inequality measures is demonstrated. This paper was first presented at the Phare-ACE Transition Economics Summer Workshop for Young Researchers, organised by CEPR, and the research was undertaken with support from the European Union (EU) Phare ACE Programme 1996.
