AnnotationThis summary reports findings from the Bangor Dementia Studies funded by the Welsh Office from 1989 to 1999. It is based on interviews with older people in Liverpool and Gwynedd with and without cognitive brain disorders identified during an epidemiological population survey, and covers their informal support networks and use of formal services. It shows that most help for those who are cognitively impaired comes from relatives living in the same household, while help for those who are physically impaired comes primarily from spouses, or relatives living in different households. Although people with dementia make more use of formal services than those with or without, levels of contact are generally low. Implications for service provision are discussed. (RH).
