AnnotationA literature review describes and explores the current state of use of restraint - the restriction of a person's liberty - particularly in the UK and the US. It is not intended to offer any value judgements about the rights or wrongs of restraints. However, it is important to note that there is general consensus in the UK that restraint in any form should be avoided; the only situation where it is considered acceptable is as a last resort and for a minimum period. The article looks back at the historical emergence of forms of restraint, and defines types of restraint. It focuses on restraint used in the care of older people by nurses, and considers whether a change in practice to avoid restraint can be successfully achieved. (RH).
