Annotation | Contemporary debates on the need for a flexible and autonomous and highly educated workforce acknowledge that the obligations imposed by the needs for lifelong learning may not be easily met by some groups of employees, older workers among them. Both labour markets and organisational flexibility have often been achieved at the cost of jobs for marginalised groups of employees. If policy-makers and employers are committed to lifelong learning in its broadest coverage, a stronger link between flexibility and lifelong learning will have to be forged. Otherwise, lifelong learning may be a means for employers to continue to act in bad faith. While appearing to distribute training opportunities equitably, in reality, they will be disconnected from security of employment or career advancement for older workers. (RH). |
