Annotation | Critical gerontology provides the background from which to explore the concept of "empowerment", and to consider critical educational gerontology. A conceptual analysis of empowerment is offered in the context of two specific subjects of later life teaching and learning: leadership and mental fitness. While the body of literature about empowerment grows, there is little theory to guide professionals working with older people in transferring responsibility for decision-making to seniors, and enabling them to assume more effective leadership roles. Power, empowerment, education and leadership are discussed, as are critical thinking and mental fitness. Empowerment is seen as being the most powerful aspect of adult education within the field of educational gerontology. (RH). |
