AnnotationLate-life sexuality is an important quality of life issue. This survey seeks to extend our knowledge of the relationship of sexual attitudes and preferences to sexual functioning of a large group of older, community-dwelling men. Some 1,200 older men aged 58 to 94 in San Francisco were surveyed with an anonymous self-administered questionnaire including 63 items regarding present and past, actual and desired sexual practices and attitudes. Although age correlated with increased erectile dysfunction and decreased sexual activity, a substantial number of older men continued to be sexually active, and were positive in attitudes toward sexual function. It was found that both health status and perceived responsiveness of a partner are prominent moderators of the age effect. In the absence of social isolation and health issues, many older men show persistently active sexual lifestyles. These findings negate some of the negative imagery of sexual expression in ageing males. (RH).
