Annotation | In the US, managed care in Medicare continues to expand, enrolling some 14% of the over 65 population. Geriatricians' skills match the needs of managed care: they are trained to analyse the benefits, costs and risks of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The author discusses possible roles for a geriatrician in a leadership role in an HMO (health management organization): as programme manager; as educator; as clinician; and in special managed care programmes in geriatrics.
