AnnotationThe EUROCARE consortium was brought together by researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry in London in response to a European Commission DG-V request for research focusing on "actions for people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases". 280 couples were recruited from 14 of the 15 EU member states for this study of carer burden. Semi-structured interview included use of the Carer Burden Inventory (CBI) and General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). The study confirmed consistently high levels of carer burden and psychological distress. There was a low level of contact with support groups and Alzheimer's disease (AD) societies, despite the samples having been of service contacts. The results suggest elements of burden which vary by country, but also elements which have a common effect in all. The data obtained suggest avenues for the primary and secondary prevention of burden which tackle clinical issues (e.g. behavioural disturbance), public attitudes and education (e.g. negative social reactions), economic support for carers (e.g. financial dissatisfaction), and higher risk groups (e.g. younger spouse carers).
