AnnotationThe Clock Drawing Test (CDT) is a recognised and accepted instrument for the early diagnosis of dementia in older people. In a prospective study, the authors evaluated the association between the results of this test and a broad range of clinical, functional and sociodemographic variables. The study was conducted on 425 older Israeli patients hospitalised for rehabilitation following stroke or hip fracture in a geriatric ward. The administration of the CDT and its scoring system were adapted from Sunderland et al and Wolf-Klein et al. Stepwise multiple regression was used to evaluate the association between the results of the CDT and other variables. The mean CDT score was 7.8 ±2.5, and 145 patients (34%) had scores of 6 or less. Of 41 variables tested, significant associations with the CDT were found only for the following: the Folstein mini-mental test, the cognition value from admission, years of education, and patient's age. There was a significant number of patients with low CDT scores, influenced particularly by two measures of cognitive function and by formal level of education, together with a weaker effect of age.
