AnnotationAllen-Burge et al's paper acknowledges the environmental factors impacting on the response and behaviour of the person with dementia. However, they do not discuss the possible underlying reasons for challenging behaviours. What is not reported by Allen-Burge et al assumes importance when considering issues about the lack of staff compliance in behavioural interventions introduced. For example, the range and number of qualified or unqualified staff on the units is not outlined. What the studies reviewed seem to suggest is that management and performance feedback systems need to be in place. Where Allen-Burge et al's paper does make a contribution is in their consideration of quantitative methods on the value of non-drug interventions to treatment. (RH).
