Annotation | Lyons and Zarit highlight the needs for policy-makers, planners and professionals to take seriously the role of carers as major providers of support for people with dementia. Killeen's commentary discusses early or late interventions: how those with dementia themselves benefit from services and their own early involvement needs to be researched. Research evidence on the effectiveness of formal services is vital, if policy-makers are to be convinced that allocation of scarce resources for the development of comprehensive dementia care services is worthwhile. Consumer-based organisations, such as Alzheimer Scotland - Action on Dementia, are well placed to to work in partnership with researchers, both to develop research programmes and to disseminate findings to key agencies and individuals able to influence change.
