AnnotationCommunity care and support for family carers of people with dementia are complex areas to research. Disciplinary, organisational and professional boundaries - as well as conflicting interests of people with dementia and their carers, practitioners, policy-makers and service providers - need to be considered. Zarit et al's paper shows that there is a substantial body of literature which attempts to evaluate services in a systematic way. Tester's commentary focuses on the key issues arising from the paper: first, the main policy issues and usefulness of the existing research for policy; second, the main methodological issues, and strengths and weaknesses of existing research as summarised in their paper; and third, the implications for future research to inform policy and practice in community-based care for people with dementia and their carers.
