Annotation | Older people are increasingly turning to home care services, in order to remain at home. For this US study, six home care workers were interviewed about the qualities needed to work with older people, and the importance of establishing caring relationships with their clients. Patience, compassion and respect were considered essential to forming successful relationships. The best home care workers derived greatest satisfaction from seeing clients improve as a result of their efforts, and learning from their clients' life experiences. Low wages, lack of a career ladder, and inadequate training are barriers to meeting the increasing demands for a workforce able to provide quality homecare to older people. (RH). |
