Annotation | The Government is actively pursuing policy objectives which emphasise the promotion of independence and the prevention of avoidable admissions to hospitals and care homes. Policy initiatives relating to rehabilitation include Better Services for Vulnerable People (BSVP). The authors outline work by the King's Fund and its Rehabilitation Development Network, which provides information and advice through its database, news bulletins, workshops and seminars. Examples of two distinct approaches to rehabilitation are described: a short-term rehabilitation unit based in a residential care home (Exebank, East Devon); and Cass Ward, Homerton Hospital, a nurse-led in-patient rehabilitation. Reference is also made to the use of re-ablement teams: the Worcestershire Community Re-ablement Team; and the Stone Rehabilitation Service, Staffordshire. These examples also feature in this and other issues of Managing Community Care. So far, most development of rehabilitation services has been piecemeal: the King's Fund Rehabilitation Programme aims to provide support to health and local authorities which uses a whole-systems approach.
