Annotation | Older people in India face problems resulting from the loosening of family and community social support systems. However, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in India can and do play a role in alleviating older people's care problems and needs, and this paper gives some examples. Having identified "grey areas" requiring attention, the author makes recommendations for strengthening and ensuring the effectiveness of NGOs and voluntary organisations in extending services to the old. This was one of the themes discussed at the National Conference on "21st Century: A New Environment for the Elderly Making the Transition" held in March 1998 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. (RH). |
