AnnotationIdeas about older American people's capacity for productive ageing have not changed overnight; and problems about superannuation attracted little attention in the early 20th century. This article examines the consequences of the 1935 Social Security Act in the US, and how social security policy-makers have subsequently reduced dependency through productivity. Old-age policies must encourage both responsibilities and rights: vital ageing presupposes the capacity and desire to contribute to continuing prosperity. (RH).
