Annotation | Ageing is a strong risk factor for non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The United Kingdom Prospective Diabetic Study Group (UKPDS) has recently published findings concerning the monitoring of patients with NIDDM. This article cites studies which suggest that monitoring of older diabetic patients in the UK for the complications of diabetes may not be meeting recommendations outlined by the British Diabetic Association or the Joint Working Party. It is accepted that ulceration is an important risk factor for subsequent amputation. The question is raised of the health system's failure to regularly assess diabetic patients' feet. Health care professionals need to heighten awareness of the importance of regular diabetic foot examination, if ulceration and lower limb amputation is to be prevented. (RH). |
