AnnotationMarriage patterns among older people in Ghana are examined in this paper, focusing on the extent to which patterns are influenced by variables such as urban or rural place of residence, and gender. The data used were obtained from the Ghana population censuses of 1960 and 1970, and 1984, and a survey conducted in 1991. Analysis of the data revealed significant differences: marital pattern was shown to differ by place of residence, gender, and age. High mortality rates among older men accounted for the gender differential seen in the proportion of the older population which was widowed. Remarriage was more prevalent among older men than older women. (AKM).
