AnnotationAbbeyfield offers a distinctive option for older people looking for "human scale" in the housing they choose in later life. Abbeyfield already operates in ten countries, and this research concerns the possibility of carrying the Abbeyfield model - which includes volunteering as a major element - further into Europe. This report presents profiles on three countries of the European Union (EU) - Denmark, Germany and Portugal - representing different models of policy and provision in the housing and care of older people. Key pieces of information identified are: demography; housing tenure; the level of specialist provision; policies for community care and housing; social security and personal finance; and acceptance of the voluntary model. From an examination of the three country profiles, it is immediately apparent that convergence in social policy in the countries of the EU has a very long way to go. Definitions and patterns of provision are very varied, and the sources of information from which to construct a context for a strategic approach are uneven. Abbeyfield International will therefore need to develop the Abbeyfield model according to the need of country concerned. (RH).
