Annotation | Since Abbeyfield was established in the UK in 1956, it has grown to become the leading provider of very sheltered housing in the UK voluntary sector. It also has a high level of volunteer involvement, and the idea has spread to nine other countries, including four in Europe. In 1998, the board of Abbeyfield International invited Nigel Appleton to consider Abbeyfield as a socially feasible option for Europe. Three countries - Denmark, Germany and Portugal - were selected as being broadly representative of the systems of housing and care services for older people. In addition to the three country profiles, this short version of the report presents pan European trends in demography, income and access to housing, tenure types, public funding, and caring. Differences in social policy and varying patterns of housing provision are identified. The author concludes that Abbeyfield could adapt its style of small scale provision to different national and local environments. (RH). |
