AnnotationOlder people were encouraged to make their voices heard at a series of conferences in Chester, Grantham, Cardiff, Bristol, London and Stirling organised by Help the Aged during March and April 1999. (A conference in Northern Ireland is the subject of a separate report). The conferences explored a range of issues associated with setting up local groups: from the impetus of getting them started, the personal benefits they bring, to the practicalities of setting up the first crucial meeting and reward of campaign successes. Workshops at each conference debated the issues of pensions, transport, affordable warmth, and making use of the media. Their detailed findings are reported in the report's executive summary. (RH).
